Happy Birthday to me...

Today is my birthday! Yippee!

I love birthdays! I never understand when people don't care about their birthdays...'Oh, it's just another year' they say with a shrug. Bah-humbug!

You should be celebrating! You should be shouting 'I've made it through another year!' like it's an accomplishment - because it is! You're alive and you're doing things and have been doing things for however many years now!

You should also be celebrating with a cake... preferably a Sugar Push cake... but that's another story... hehe!

Aside from all the celebrating, birthdays are a good time to reflect on where you've been, how far you've come, and where you're heading.

I read a quote a long time ago - and naturally now I can't remember exactly what it said, who said it, or where to find it! However, the general idea of it was that for creative people (artists if you like) there is always a point you reach where you get a little disillusioned. Your work is 'good', but it's not 'great'. You've come a long way since you began, but you still are no where near where you imagine yourself to be - where you would like to be. This is because you have impeccable taste and your work doesn't quite live up to it.

When a person reaches this point, there are two options.

A) You can give up and decide that your work probably won't ever reach a standard to satisfy yourself so it would be better to focus on something else.
B) Practise, practise, practise! Learn! Explore! Try new things!

I like option B.

I'm now twenty four. The year ahead is going to be one full of excitement as I chase my dreams and hopefully learn an incredible amount. By the time I'm 25 I am aiming to no longer be 'good'.

Of course, I'm not delusional enough to think I'm going to be as great as my cake decorating idols in a years time, but I do hope to cross that border between 'good' and 'great'.

Meanwhile, since it's my birthday I made myself a cake! I designed it based on these gorgeous cocktail invitations by Oh Happy Day. I managed to cover not just the cake, but also myself and everything I own in 'edible glitter', but it was worth it.
